A Note From Dave: Sunday May 31st

Hi everyone,

We are really excited to have Pastor Matt Sharples from Abundant Life Church joining us this week at Energizer Church. Pastor Matt has a fantastic message on his heart just for us this week!

Nehemiah brought security back to Jerusalem through reconstructing the walls and gates around the City. To do that he needed to see himself as a builder, even though his background was hospitality and security.

Regardless of our background and experience, God wants to use us as builders. We’re building lives, we’re building families, we’re building hope, we’re building faith, we’re building the spiritual climate of our City and we’re building generations.

Let’s jump in, continue to “Do it different” and continue to build people and we’ll be amazed at what God does in us, for us and through us.

You’re all builders, but it’s in unity that we achieve something incredible!

See you in church,

Ps. Dave

A Note From Dave: Sunday May 24th

Last week we launched a new series called “Builders”. We’re building lives, we’re building families, we’re building hope, we’re building faith, we’re building the spiritual climate of our City and we’re building generations.

Nehemiah was the man that brought security, hope and a future back to the city of Jerusalem through the re-establishment of the broken and burned city walls. The walls of Jerusalem are a picture of the way the walls of any life, of any local church, of any community, or of any nation can be rebuilt into strength and power and purpose again.

We don’t have to look very far to find broken lives, families, communities and cities. Sometimes the challenges can feel insurmountable and the solutions may feel overwhelming or we can feel like ‘someone should do something’ or ‘why don’t they fix it’?

Nehemiah probably couldn’t understand why people had allowed Jerusalem to remain in such a place of brokenness. But he now saw how he could contribute to the future. He decided it wasn’t going to remain the same on his watch. He was able to see himself beyond his current occupation, position and place. With a background in hospitality, he was able to see himself as a builder.

We all need to see ourselves as builders and take responsibility for our watch.

See you on site…I mean in Church 🙂

True or False: Thoughts on 1 Timothy 1

image

My husband and I are wrestling with a very big decision at the moment and I have been really struggling to find a peace one way or another. Tonight, as I went to the Word, I discovered that lately, my spirituality hasn’t been all that spiritual; no wonder I can’t make my mind up. Essentially, when Paul wrote to Timothy, the first chapter of his letter addressed those members of the Ephesian Church who had gotten themselves caught up in false spirituality. Distinguishing between true and false spirituality really hasn’t been my strong point lately. Although I have spent a lot of time talking ABOUT God and church, ministry and ‘doing’ for God have absolutely dominated my schedule, I have found my spirit to be feeling tired and broken. I have neglected my true spirituality: time spent in the presence of my father. True and false spirituality can, I believe, be distinguished by whether one feels added unto, or detracted from, as a result.

Paul regards Timothy’s role to be to remain exactly where he is, through consistency and example, gently correct those who have been waylaid by false spirituality. Above all, Paul encourages his disciple to continue to demonstrate love and being real with people. The leaders in the Ephesian church have become obsessed with discovering what they regarded to be secret codes and patterns in the Old Testament, rather than sharing the Gospel. This reminds me of some of the long and complex debates around creation and evolution that some believers are prone to getting sucked into. These conversations may be very intriguing, but it is unlikely that you will ever argue someone to salvation without offering the Gospel (IMHO).

Paul is understanding of those who have become confused in their spiritual focus, probably because of his background. Before his dramatic conversion, Paul was an especially zealous Jew and great persecutor of Christians, whom he regarded to be deserters of the Jewish faith. So Paul understood what it meant to become obsessed with the teachings of the Law of the Old Testament and he knew that this obsession could blind one to the truth and urgency of the Gospel, much the same as I’ve been finding my busyness with the things of God to be crowding out time actually spent with God. Thankfully, even more so than Paul and Timothy, God is patient and graceful; always wanting the best for us and leading us back to the truth.

We live in a world where the theoretical and hypothetical are incredibly highly regarded. Ethical boundaries are seen as relative and seem to be constantly shifting. If our spirituality exists only as a theoretical framework and not as a practice and relationship, then we cannot rely on it to guide our conscience when the tough decisions come around. Only authentic relationship creates real trust.

A Note From Dave: Sunday May 17th

Hi everyone,

Nehemiah is remembered as a great builder and leader. He achieved in 52 days what others had not been able to do in 75 years.

They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”
4 When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven. (Neh 1 4-4)

This mighty achievement was birthed when his heart was moved when he saw injustice; when he saw people living without security and when he saw that his God was no longer honoured in his hometown.

As we go into Church Together, so many of you have worked really hard. Some have been through a challenging season. We do it because our hearts have been moved for our City. We continue to build a church because our hearts are moved towards the people of our city.

We are Builders.
We are builders; we build physical buildings, we’re building effective platforms for the future.

We’re building families.
We’re building hope.
We’re building faith.
We’re building the spiritual climate of our City.
We’re building generations.
We’re building a legacy.
We’re building the Kingdom!

As soon as Nehemiah’s heart was moved, he prayed and fasted. Let’s continue to pray for our City; pray that God will work mighty through Church Together this Sunday, pray that He will work mightily in our service, pray that He will continue to use us as He builds His Church.

Remember you are a builder!
God might just use you to do what previous generations thought was impossible.

Ps Dave

SuperMum June is On Board, Heart and Soul

I would like to introduce you to a vital, warm, encouraging and strong woman, whom I know I am very pleased to call my friend. June Gan-Pain has many roles: she is an Energizer Church board member; Practice manager; qualified accountant; board member/treasurer for Pathways Tasmania; wife and home maker; but her most important job is being a mother to her two children.
June is mother to Rupert, eight, and Isabelle, nine. Her children’s age gap is only nineteen months, which June totally does not recommend, due to the back to back nappies and lack of sleep, but believes is totally worth the effort, as they are the best of friends. Just don’t ask them if they are twins!

June warmly refers to her children as Miss Sunshine and Mr Funny as Isabelle is a happy and fun loving girl and Rupert is a very humorous boy who sees the funny side of everything. June explains “as a mother, every day is a new day, facing new challenges ahead; being with my church family gives me the connection and reinforcement to my faith. For me, the support is crucial, as it take a village to raise a child; my preference is that my church family will help me raise my children.”

June understands that faith is the centre of her being. She strives to lead her life around her faith, to be a better woman. Having read a lot of parenting books, June has gained valuable advice from them, ultimately though her ‘go to’ book is still the principles and teachings in the Bible. Not only is the word of God a good parenting book, it is her comfort, her guidance and her shelter.

June’s favourite part of parenting is to see her two little people enjoy the blessings we receive from Jesus, to appreciate what we have and have compassion for others. June’s maternal heart also flows into other areas alongside her family values; she also loves to empower children in poverty with education, to ensure they are self-sufficient and to shift future generations from poverty. Her heart is for India.

In 2014, by swimming across the River Derwent, June managed to raise much needed money for Vision Rescue, which enabled 12 children to have a hot meal each day and a chance to be ready to attend school.

June was able to gain a greater sense of God in her world through this journey, and the sense that if she is called again to serve the Kingdom in a new way, Jesus is there waiting, swimming beside her. The reward of June’s personal experience far outweighs the money raised. Her bigger challenge lies ahead, and that is to have others feel a greater presence of God, just as she does.

June has also, for the past seven years, been a board member and Treasurer for Pathways Tasmania, a non-profit organisation that operates two supported accommodation services: Launch Youth, which empowers youth without a place to call home, and Live Free Tassie, which helps young men live addiction free. This is an amazing organisation, inspired by a heart for the kingdom of God. Tasmania is truly blessed to have the support of the community for this worthy cause.

June also believes everyone has their role to play in the kingdom of God; each of us is gifted with individual skills and no task is more important than the other. Together we get the job done. June is convinced that her role is to do her part, stay close to God, stay strong with her calling and stand firm in her belief.

June loves that her part in church makes a small difference which, combined with others’ numerous small differences, becomes a big difference. Initially, June volunteered because of her need to be in touch with her skill set while on maternity leave. She never imagined that God would be working through financial statements and turning deficits to surpluses. Time and time again, she saw provisions come at the hardest of times. June has continually seen the faith in others so strong; their continuing commitment humbles her. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

June would like to share with us with some advice and encouragement, “To me, serving long term has to come from within; it has to stir a passion. It is a conviction and a calling. Be sure serving is long term and needs to withstand the difficult seasons in order to enjoy the fruit of the good seasons. How do you find that certainty and passion? Talk to people who are currently serving, put your hand up, just give it a go. After committing to it for some time and you find one area is not suitable, have another go at another area. While you are finding your path, you get to build relationships with people with a similar mindset for serving. In doubt, try, try and try again. My advice for motherhood, rather points to remind myself, is not to be too hard on ourselves; we are only human and can only do so much. Do the best we can, the rest: try not to worry so much. We leave that in God’s hands. Remember, He has it under control!”

My advice to you is if you haven’t met, or haven’t spent much time with June, do yourself a favour and have a coffee and a chat soon. June is an intriguing, interesting, purpose-driven and kind woman and I hope you also can call her your friend one day.

Mothers Day

mothers day

Hi Church,

This Sunday at Energizer Church we have planned two very special Mother’s Day Services for our Hobart & Derwent Valley campuses. Our theme for the day is “YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE MY ONLY SUNSHINE”. So many of the women and mothers in our world model grace, love and kindness to us in a very real, tangible and consistent way and bring that little ray of sunshine that lights up our day! This Sunday we will do our best to help the women and mothers present feel honoured, cherished, loved and valued. This is a great day to bring your Mum to Church and then continue to make her day special.   Kids Church will be running their regular exciting program in the morning, which commences at 10am. There will be treats and gifts for all the girls as well as a special high tea, pampering & even a special selfie station to take some happy Mother’s Day snaps, so make sure you invite your mothers, sisters, daughters and friends to join us. 10am – Hobart (8 Petchey Street, Bellerive) 4pm – Derwent Valley (19 Circle Street, New Norfolk)   Of course, this service is not just for the girls. There will be inspiring worship and a message for us all, not to mention fantastic fellowship with our church family!   Can’t wait to see you in church on Sunday. Then, one more week after that is Church Together – what an exciting time for the churches of Southern Tasmania!

God Bless Dave & Alix

Heart & Soul: Who Cares?

image
Hi Church,

At Heart and Soul This Monday, 7:30pm at our Hobart Campus, we ask a real question: “Who Cares?”

Care is not something we just feel or even do from time to time. It is a core value and is entwined in our culture at Energizer.

Our Values state:
We value all people, everywhere, for everyone has a story. We warmly welcome and accept others regardless of age, background or culture. We value all people as created in the image of God. We see the potential in every person to be restored, made whole, developed in their area of gifting and live out their God-given purpose.

In summary; We care about People.

Culture is stronger than rules, legislation and ideals that might be imposed on us.
Culture could be: the total of the inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action.

As a church our culture carries our values to a place of action and decision. We can have great vision and ideals, but it will be the culture we have as a church, that will subconsciously effect and determine how we are perceived, how accepted people feel, and whether we live in an environment where our ideals and values are actually felt and enacted.

Heart and Soul is a place where we get to work on and build a strong culture; a culture that will truly carry Jesus to our community, a culture where people encounter Jesus in a real, welcoming and life changing way.

I would love you to join as at Heart and Soul this Monday night, as together we go on a journey of strengthening our Culture of Care.

Because People Matter.

We are in for a great night!

Ps Dave

A Note From Dave: Sunday May 3rd

Hi everyone!
It was great to be back worshiping with my family this Sunday. We had a great time away at the National ACC Conference and then ministering at Twin Rivers Church in Brisbane over the weekend.

It’s encouraging to hear and see what God is doing in our Nation and beyond through our movement. It’s always powerful to be reminded that we are all part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Then, there is something really special about being home with your own family. So Alix and I were thrilled to be with our family this Sunday.

In Matthew 12 Jesus talks about who our spiritual family is and what the binding factor is:
Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!” (Matthew 12:48-50 NLT)

The common or binding factor is connection to our Father.
I’m sure, like me, you can remember having some full-on arguments with your siblings as you were growing up. Mostly those interactions didn’t make us feel insecure in the family because our place was connected through our relationship with our parents. It is our relationship to our Father that gives us our place and security in the body of Christ. As we find security in Him we love, accept, encourage, care for and build up our brothers and sisters.

Jesus made the point:
Connection to their Heavenly Father gave them shared purpose and unshakable security that built a sense of family that would transcend any physical experience of family.
It is that understanding that makes us strong as a family at Energizer.

See you in Church as we worship together as Family.
